Welcome

A NOTE ABOUT THIS GUIDE

I’m so excited for your engagement session! Marriage is the best! You have such a fun journey ahead! I want you to know that I’m honored to be your photographer and humbled that you’ve trusted me with the responsibility of helping you create memories you’ll look back on and cherish for a lifetime. I can’t wait to celebrate with you on your big day and be at your side to capture all the memories you’ll make with each other and the people you love most. But first, let’s talk about your engagement session!

As a photographer, I believe your engagement session is one of the most important parts of the pre-wedding process for four reasons. First, it gives us a chance to spend time together and get to know each other better before the big day. Second, it gives you a chance to get comfortable in front of my camera so you’ll know exactly what to do and be posing pros by the time the wedding rolls around. Timelines can be pretty tight on wedding days and 30 minutes may be all we have for portraits - which is why I’ve found that wedding day portraits turn out so much better when couples do engagement sessions ahead of time. Third, it gives you a set of beautiful images that you can use for save-the-dates, your wedding website, prints to display at the rehearsal dinner or reception, frames for your wall in your new home together and so much more! Most importantly, it gives you a way to freeze this special time in your life. A chance to pause, take a deep breath and relish in this season together. You’ll be husband and wife for fifty plus years, but you only get to be fiances for a short little window of your life! With your engagement session, I want to help you slow down long enough to remember this short, sweet season of life for years to come.

Love,

For your session to be as fun and stress-free as possible! That’s why I’ve created this guide just for you! The following pages will help you get the absolute most out of your photos. By the time you’ve read through it, you'll have all of your questions answered and feel ready and prepared for your session!

my goal is simple:

This guide is packed with my best tips, tricks and insider secrets for scheduling and styling your engagement session –– and everything in between. Your only job is to be yourselves, laugh a lot, have fun and let me do the rest! I can’t wait to get you in front of my camera and I’m so excited to see you soon!

I get it. Having your picture taken for 1-2 hours might not be in your top-10 favorite things to do during your downtime. And at first you might feel sort of awkward being in front of the camera. But I think you’ll find that by the end of the session, it’s a lot easier than you thought, and you even had a little fun. I look forward to it because it’s a great opportunity for us all to hang out a bit before the wedding day.

The Guys

A NOTE TO

Engagement sessions can take place anywhere from immediately following a proposal to just a few days before the wedding. I’ve found that there isn’t a “good” or “bad” time of year to take your photos. I normally plan sessions based on a particular look a couple has in mind, spring flowers for example, or based on schedules.

Sessions typically last about an hour and a half and when when we can—I love to begin sessions about two hours before sunset. This time of day is called golden hour, when the sun is lower in the sky, and it creates a beautiful glow in the trees and around your heads. Shooting in the evening also lets us avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. The first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot.

I schedule sessions during what we believe will be the best light of the day - which means that it’s super important to be on time. If you’re late to an evening session, we could run out of light before we’ve finished shooting and if your session takes place in the morning, the sun gets more harsh as it rises.

Is there a "good" time to take photos?

TIME & LIGHT

While we shoot most of our engagement sessions between April and late November, sessions can take place all year. Most of our couples choose a season based on the location where they want to shoot.

A few things to keep in mind during each season:

Seasons

Winter

snowfall, hot cocoa and cozy coats

If you’re planning to take your engagement photos during the winter, keep in mind that if your session takes place in the evening, we could begin shooting as early as 2:30pm to catch the sunset. I recommend dressing in layers so that in between photos you can warm up. Make sure you bring a little extra makeup and tissues in case your nose begins running.

Spring

fresh flowers and sunny days

Even though Spring begins in March, I typically don’t begin shooting for another 6 weeks because the weather in Virginia is still pretty chilly. When I schedule spring dates, I typically schedule both a primary date and a backup rain date.

Summer

In spite of the heat, I'm a big fan of summer sessions! Because of the later sunset, sessions sometimes begin as late as 6pm. If you’re taking your engagement photos during the summer, I recommend bringing extra makeup and a few towels to make sure you stay fresh throughout your session.

Fall

Fall is one of the prettiest times of the year on the East Coast and because of the perfect weather, my schedule typically book up quickly! If you have your heart set on a fall engagement session, I recommend scheduling it as soon as you book!

If your wedding is local, save the dates should be sent between 6 and 8 months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, you’ll want to send them out 8 to 10 months before the wedding.

If you’re hoping to use your engagement photos for your save the dates, we recommend scheduling your session at least two months before you plan to send out your save-the-dates. Between inclement weather, editing, designing your save-the-dates and printing, two months is generally a safe amount of time to make sure your images and cards are ready.

Locations

Virginia, Dc, & Maryland SESSION LOCATIONS

Your portrait location is a pretty big decision, and it is entirely up to you! The first thing to decide is what kind of landscape/vibe that you want to feature. You might want something classic and elegant, such as a historic estate, or the natural beauty of the outdoors, like mountains, forest, or desert! From ski slopes to lavender fields to apple picking and college campuses, the options for session locations are endless.

Here’s a list of local areas that are popular for photo sessions! Some require permits (but those are often the prettiest places), so we would need to plan those in advance.

Destination Engagement Sessions

While we take most of our engagement sessions in Northern VA and Richmond,
we’ve photographed sessions everywhere from Charlotte to Salt Lake City to Houston to Los Angeles. If you have a location in mind that is significant to the two of you, let us know because if our schedules align, we might be able to take your engagement photos outside of our normal area. We absolutely love traveling, so we are totally down to join you in a beautiful place!

Travel fees may apply depending on the location and our availability.

Our dogs have been huge parts of our families, which is why we love when couples choose to incorporate pets into their session. Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we’ll need to choose a pet-friendly location.

I recommend planning for your pet to be at the first part of your session and then either dropping them off or having a friend take them home. We won’t use the pet in every single photo so it’s also nice to have a friend available to hold him or her in between shots.

If you’re going to bring a pet, I recommend exercising your pet before the session and bringing your pets favorite toy or treats! Depending on your pet’s fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.

TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUR BEST

Alright, it's now time for the biggest question of all, "What do we wear?" This can be kind of overwhelming, but hopefully this section will ease some of your worries! I want you to feel great and look amazing, while keeping the attention on the people in the photo rather than the outfits.

Generally, couples will bring options and we will decide together what looks best. Maybe bring 3-4 bottoms, 4-5 tops, a couple dresses, and whatever accessories you have! For the shoot, I think it's best to have at least one formal outfit and one casual, so bring a variety. Maxi dresses are one of my favorites, since they have beautiful movement and are both feminine and flattering. I recommend saving your favorite outfit for later in the session, when couples usually feel more comfortable in front of the camera. And don’t forget to bring a few accessories! Pretty necklaces, cute shoes and classic watches are great ways to add detail to outfits.

Oh, and keep in mind, you probably will be changing behind or inside the car or in a public restroom!

MIX THIS UP: In general, I recommend keeping to neutral, muted, and earthy tones. Pastel colors also look beautiful as well. Nearly every color comes in a muted version. Some of the prettiest colors are blush, tans, light pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays and whites. Bright, fluorescent colors can be distracting. The only color I specifically discourage is bright red, as it casts a strange pinky color on skin that is not flattering in photos. You also don’t want to blend in too much- don’t wear green if we are meeting in a grassy field. And remember that these photos will be on your walls and framed around your home, so having timeless, neutral colors will turn these photos into beautiful decor.

When picking outfits I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” For example, if the guy is wearing a blue and pink pastel plaid shirt, the girl want to choose a long, soft blue dress. It can also be a great idea to choose “color-families,” such as pastels or jewel tones.  Select a color palette with complementary colors, just like you would when designing the interior of your home!

Colors

Patterns are fun and definitely add interest to photos. Try to avoid big, loud patterns that will distract from your faces. If you select clothes with patterns, keep it subtle, no matter if it's a big pattern or small pattern. I also discourage multi-colored small prints, as it looks really funky in the end image.

Another way to add interest to an outfit, is choosing clothing with texture. This mostly applies to dresses, jackets, and sweaters. For example, choosing a soft oatmeal-colored sweater adds a little interest over a long sleeve cotton tee in the same color (even though both would look great). Lace is another beautiful way to add interest, not to mention that lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms.

Prints & Patterns

Consider how your clothing will move when you walk, run, twirl, or even catch the wind when it blows. This is for both comfort and how awesome the outfits look in the images. You will probably be doing a lot of moving during the session, since I love asking my clients to spin, chase each other, or give each other big bear hugs (way more fun than just normal posing). With this in mind, dress accordingly. Avoid anything too short or low-cut that might show too much when you move around. And stay away from anything too tight in the hips or belly area. If you feel a little self conscious when you wear it, maybe leave it at home! And make sure to break in your jeans or new shoes before the shoot so you’re more comfortable when the session comes!

Movement

find it fast

Heels lengthen legs but if your heels aren’t comfortable for walking, skip the pumps and wear pretty sandals or flats, or bring an extra pair of shoes to slip into in between shots.

For casual outfits, sandals, flats, boots, and cute little sneakers (like Vans or Keds) look great.

Statement jewelry is a great way to add color or pattern to a simple dress. Lace and tulle look amazing in photographs.

And dresses with lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms. Depending on your location, you might want to consider a flowy dress!  They look great in walking shots and photos with movement. Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to dress up!

Engagement sessions are the perfect time for a hair and makeup trial! Professionally done hair & makeup last longer than typical hair & makeup. They also tend to hold up better for humidity and wind.  We think it’s so important that you look and feel your best for your engagement photos - and if you’re planning to do a hair & makeup trial anyways, the engagement session is a great time to test how your hair & makeup look on camera.

If you do your own makeup, I recommend wearing it a little heavier than you normally do, since photographs seem to make makeup disappear! Wear a dab of lipstick, an extra swipe of blush, or even treat yourself to some lash extensions the week before (they look amazing on camera!).

There will probably be times during your session when we’re shooting your hands holding or the engagement ring on your hand - which means it’s a good idea to clean up your nails before your session (this applies to the guys too!).

You can’t go wrong with a suit and tie. Consider pulling out that suit you had to wear last time you were a groomsmen! Layer with a blazer and a fun tie - you can even wear jeans with this look. Bowties are always a good idea. For a casual look, consider a plain, simple tee and jeans or khakis! Simple looks always look good. Check out the pinterest board for tips!

Be careful not to choose a pattern that is too small - it may accidentally make your photo look a little too busy. Softer, pastel colors tend to photograph better than bright colors - especially since bright colors could reflect on your skin. Cozy sweaters layered over button ups are a great way to stay warm and stylish during the cooler months.

Props

champagne is always a good idea

If you’re planning to bring props to your engagement session, we recommend including them only if they’re meaningful to you. Examples: Drinking coffee at a local coffee shop, flying a kite together, or bringing a guitar.

When I can, I always try to take a photo of your ring during your engagement session - so it’s a good idea to have it cleaned or clean it yourself before your shoot! To clean at home, soak your ring in warm water with dishwashing soap for 20 to 40 minutes. Then gently brush the stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and repeat if needed.

Ring Cleaning

When it comes to posing for your engagement session, you don’t need to worry about a thing! I’ll guide you through the entire process beginning with “poses” that are super easy and natural. If I tell you to do something that feels a little funny, it’s probably because we know it’s going to make the two of you laugh - and that’s the photo we’re actually looking for.

Throughout your session, I’ll keep an eye on your hair, makeup and outfits to make sure things stay in place. We want you to feel as relaxed as possible and enjoy your time together!

POSING

Date Night

If you’re anything like us, you probably don’t get dressed up all that often. Which means that the day of your engagement session is the perfect occasion for a date night (or brunch if your session is in the morning!)

The engagement session is another part of celebrating your love and heading off to dinner is a great way to end the session!

After your session is complete, I'll begin editing your images! Unless we have a holiday closure, you can expect to receive your engagement photos between 3 and 4 weeks after your session.

When to Expect Your Images

I know that this guide is long and hopefully it covers everything you need to know to prep for your engagement session! However if there is something I missed, or you need a recommendation feel free to email

THANK YOU!
